NEED
The American Academy of Medical Acupuncture is pleased to present a symposium which meets the expressed need of physician acupuncturists to examine the mechanisms of acupuncture from several different perspectives and for more information on scientific studies and research findings regarding acupuncture. This meeting addresses topics suggested by practitioners and stresses the different acupuncture approaches to dealing with every day practical clinical problems with an emphasis on the scientific evidence for those approaches. Physicians have expressed the desire for exposure to alternative approaches to common clinical challenges. The different disciplines of acupuncture to be reviewed include Neuro-Anatomic, Energetics, and Traditional Chinese Medicine. We will look at the different ways of treating the same clinical problems using these different disciplines, thus giving physicians not only a choice for treatment but also the sophistication of combining two or more disciplines to strengthen the efficacy of their treatment.
The thrust of this conference is to offer a multi-tiered approach to the understanding and clinical significance of acupuncture in a physician's daily practice, and to expand the awareness and understanding of the scientific research ongoing to examine the effects of acupuncture and acupuncture efficacy. It is designed to provide physicians with information on different approaches to the treatment of common conditions seen in clinical practice so that they may tailor acupuncture treatments to the needs of their individual patients. The conference focuses on clinically relevant treatment approaches and techniques which the physician acupuncturist can put to immediate use.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
The Symposium is designed for instruction and training of physicians (MDs and DOs) interested in or already practicing acupuncture. Physicians with no experience and those with extensive background in medical acupuncture will find the program useful to their medical practices.
The pre-symposium workshops are intended to provide a more concentrated learning experience where the faculty can spend the entire day focused on a topic in greater depth and with more time for practical examples from clinical experiences. Those physicians with an interest in achieving a a better understanding of the concept of mind-body medicine and how it may be integrated into acupuncture practice should attend the Pre-Symposium Workshop: "Making Mind-Body Medicine an Integral Part of Your Medical Acupuncture Practice"
Modern research in acupuncture and related energetic phenomenon is revealing new challenges and opportunities for practitioners. Physicians interested in learning how this can benefit their practice, should attend the Pre-Symposium Workshop "New Research Can Enhance the Speed and Effectiveness of Acupuncture".
Theory and practice are not always consistent. Those seeking practical clinical advice based on years of clinical practice from the TCM perspective, should attend the Pre-Symposium Workshop "After 35 Years of Practice: Shedding Light on Various Aspects of the Theory and Technique of Acupuncture". Based on his years of experience, Francois Beyens provides a pragmatic approach to dealing with functional problems, describes practical uses of Five Elements and will address the limits of acupuncture in practice.
Finally, for those with several years of experience with more than one form of acupuncture, such as energetics, TCM, hand or auricular acupuncture, the Pre Symposium Workshop "Strategies in Acupuncture Treatment" suggests a process for integrating those approaches that can best lead to rapid results and long-term benefits. Physicians with over 200 hours of formal medical acupuncture training and more than three years experience may choose the workshops that best suit their interest.
ACCREDITATION
The American Academy of Medical Acupuncture is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
The American Academy of Medical Acupuncture designates the Symposium for up to 22 hours of CME in Category 1 of the Physician's Recognition Award of the American Medical Association. The Pre-Symposium Workshops have been designated for up to 7 1/2 hours of CME in Category 1 of the Physician's Recognition Award of the American Medical Association.
The 2005 Symposium is dedicated to bringing you clinical diagnostic and therapeutic information critical to your important task of improving patient care.
OBJECTIVES
PRE-SYMPOSIUM WORKSHOP I: "Making Mind-Body Medicine an Integral Part of Your Medical Acupuncture Practice" - James Gordon, MD Physicians attending this workshop will:
Become familiar with the theory and concepts of mind-body medicine and understand the central place it holds in a holistic or integrative approach to medicine. Review and become familiar with the most important scientific literature on mind-body medicine to better understand the potential for improving treatment results. Explore approaches that practitioners can take to integrate mind-body medicine into their acupuncture practice.
PRE-SYMPOSIUM WORKSHOP II: "How New Research Can Enhance the Speed and Effectiveness of Acupuncture" - James L. Oschman, PhD Physicians attending this workshop will:
Focus on modern research into acupuncture and related energetic phenomenon and the implications for how acupuncture is practiced and how outcomes can be affected. Become familiar with research on the size and location of acupuncture points and review alternative methods for accurate point location and the value of the use of these different approaches. Explore the ways the new biophysical understanding of energetics can lead to more rapid and effective resolution of both acute and chronic physical and emotional trauma. Achieve an understanding of both local and systemic effects of acupuncture and thus gain an understanding of the effects that can result from utilizing acupuncture.
PRE-SYMPOSIUM WORKSHOP III: "After 35 Years of Practice: Shedding Light on Various Aspects of the Theory and Technique of Acupuncture" - Francois Beyens, MD Physicians attending this workshop will:
Learn pragmatic, TCM approaches to the use of acupuncture in the treatment of various functional problems. Review practical uses of five elements in clinical treatment situations. Review different types of stiff necks from a social perspective and treating them with acupuncture. Learn a practical approach to adapt the treatment and the similarities, differences and synergistic aspects of the acupuncture and manual medicine healing systems to the patients' profiles. Learn the limits of acupuncture experienced over a 35 year career----what pathological conditions may be treated successfully and which should be avoided. Be able to describe the boundary between likely success and likely failure.
PRE-SYMPOSIUM WORKSHOP IV: "Strategies in Acupuncture Treatment" - Yue-Pang Mok, MD, FAAMA Physicians attending this workshop will:
Review and understand the five systems of pulse diagnosis---classical/ 5 elements, new TCM, Ying-Yang, Curious Meridian and seven star. Build on the participants' several years of experience with two or more systems of acupuncture, learn a rapid system that permits the compilation of a treatment plan for symptom relief and to benefit the patient's mind-body. Learn reliable rapid assessment and treatment techniques of short duration. Learn the concepts of acu-dynamics and acu-kinetics and their value in improving treatment results.
GENERAL SESSIONS
Physicians attending the Symposium will be able to:
Understand how to integrate acupuncture into a contemporary medical practice. Understand the opportunities to utilize various approaches to the treatment of pain, headaches, musculoskeletal problems and common medical conditions. Learn the theoretical basis of and practical treatment techniques of acupuncture in the treatment of pain and common medical conditions. Learn how certain common medical conditions are evaluated and treated utilizing hand and scalp acupuncture. Learn the findings of recent research on the effects and efficacy of acupuncture and the practice implications. Learn the results of extensive research and clinical studies in the uses of electro-acupuncture and the implications for clinical application. Better understand the concepts of classical Chinese theories in the practical use of acupuncture in treatment approaches in a modern clinical setting. Learn how conditions commonly found in clinical practice can be treated using any one of several acupuncture approaches, or in combination, thus enhancing overall treatment results.
