NEED
The
American Academy of Medical Acupuncture is pleased to present
a symposium which meets the expressed need of physician acupuncturists
to examine the mechanisms of acupuncture from several different
perspectives. This meeting addresses topics suggested by practitioners
and stress the different acupuncture approaches to dealing with
every day practical clinical problems. Physicians have expressed
the desire for exposure to alternative approaches to common
clinical challenges. The different disciplines of acupuncture
to be reviewed include Energetics, Neuro-anatomical, YNSA Scalp
Acupuncture, Auricular Therapy and Auricular Medicine and Traditional
Chinese Medicine. We will look at the different ways of treating
the same clinical problems using these different disciplines,
thus giving physicians not only a choice for treatment but also
the sophistication of combining two or more disciplines to strengthen
the efficacy of their treatment.
The
thrust of this conference is to offer a multi-tiered approach
to the understanding and clinical significance of acupuncture
in a physician's daily practice, and to expand the outlook and
practice styles of medical acupuncturists. It is designed to
provide physicians with information on different approaches
to the treatment of common conditions seen in clinical practice
so that they may tailor acupuncture treatments to the needs
of their individual patients. The conference focuses on clinically
relevant treatment approaches and techniques which the physician
acupuncturist can put to immediate use.
WHO
SHOULD ATTEND?
The
Symposium is designed for instruction and training of physicians
interested in or already practicing acupuncture. Physicians
with no experience and those with extensive background in medical
acupuncture will find the program useful to their medical practices.
*Physicians with no or minimal exposure to acupuncture should
attend the Pre-Symposium Introductory Workshops on medical acupuncture
with Dr. Helms and Dr. Cignolini as preparation for the Full
Symposium.
*Physicians
wishing to learn practical and effective ways to treat a variety
of neurological conditions should attend the Pre-Symposium Workshop
"Neuro-Anatomical Acupuncture for Neurological Disorders".
This session will cover how this neuro-anatomic approach can
be successfully utilized in the treatment of a variety of neurological
disorders and will provide an anatomical basis for the mechanism
of acupuncture systematic diagnostic paradigm which allows understanding
and treatment of patients with complex presentations.
Physicians
with an Energetics style of acupuncture training wishing to
better understand the integration of TCM concepts should attend
the Pre-Symposium Workshop "TCM - Diagnosis, Integration
with Bio-Medical Science and Clinical Applications" This
workshop is designed to enhance physician awareness and understanding
of TCM syndrome diagnosis, TCM integrations with biomedical
science and to show how TCM can be a useful adjunct to the Energetics
approach.
For
those who wish to learn about "Yamamoto New Scalp Acupuncture"
and to observe Dr. Toshikatsu Yamamoto in the treatment of patients
utilizing this unique approach should attend the Pre-Symposium
Workshop AIntroduction to Yamamoto New Scalp Acupuncture"
where the unique diagnostic and treatment approaches developed
by Dr. Yamamoto will be discussed and demonstrated. A second
Advanced level workshop offered by Dr. Yamamoto to those physicians
who have previous training in YNSA, will place greater emphasis
on advanced level treatment for different cases.
*Physicians
with over 200 hours of formal medical acupuncture training and
more than three years experience may choose the workshops that
best suit their interest.
Accreditation
The
American Academy of Medical Acupuncture is accredited by the
Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide
continuing medical education for physicians.
The
American Academy of Medical Acupuncture designates the Symposium
for up to 22 hours of CME in Category 1 of the Physician's Recognition
Award of the American Medical Association. The Pre-Symposium
Workshops have been designated for up to 7 1/2 hours of CME
in Category 1 of the Physician's Recognition Award of the American
Medical Association.
The
2002 Symposium is dedicated to bringing you clinical diagnostic
and therapeutic information critical to your important task
of improving patient care.
OBJECTIVES
PRE-SYMPOSIUM
WORKSHOP I: "Introduction to Medical Acupuncture"
Physicians
attending this workshop will:
Become
familiar with the history of medical acupuncture and will learn
the anatomic and pathophysiologic bases of medical acupuncture
from the Energetics perspective and from the Traditional Chinese
Medicine Perspective. They will be introduced to the array of
clinically useful acupuncture treatments that physician acupuncturists
utilize in their practice and will become familiar with various
treatment modalities that comprise the working foundation of
medical acupuncture from these perspectives.
PRE-SYMPOSIUM
WORKSHOP II: "Introduction to Yamamoto New Scalp Acupuncture"
Physicians
attending this workshop will:
Learn the theory and principles of the "Yamamoto New Scalp
Acupuncture" including the YNSA basic and ypsilon points.
Observe the application of YSNA techniques to treat various
conditions through the treatment and analysis of actual clinical
situations through patient and case presentations. Understand
the principles of the treatment of various conditions including
stroke, pain syndromes and neurological conditions. And will
better understand how the "Yamamoto New Scalp Acupuncture"
techniques can be applied in clinical situations and be integrated
with traditional Western medical practices.
PRE-SYMPOSIUM
WORKSHOP III: "Neuro-Anatomic Acupuncture for Neurological
Disorders"
Physicians
attending this workshop will:
Better
understand the general concept of neuro-anatomical acupuncture.
Study and analyze the anatomy of individual acupuncture points
and the application of neuro-anatomical acupuncture clinically
to treat neurological disorders. Observe the neuro-anatomical
acupuncture strategies and the patient's therapeutic response.
PRE-SYMPOSIUM
WORKSHOP IV: "TCM - Diagnosis, Integration with Bio-Medical
Science and Clinical Applications"
Physicians
attending this workshop will:
Reinforce
TCM knowledge of theory and practice and will help advance them
to a higher level of practice. Become acquainted with TCM theories
and treatment principles. Explore how to integrate TCM acupuncture
into anatomic and energetic acupuncture models. Learn the basis
of much of TCM diagnosis, Eight Principles and how these parameters
are applied to define disease in terms beyond conventional medical
diagnosis.
GENERAL SESSIONS
Physicians
attending the Symposium will be able to:
Understand
how to integrate acupuncture into a contemporary medical practice.
Understand the opportunities to utilize various approaches to
the treatment of pediatric illness. Learn the theoretical basis
of the neuro-anatomic approach to acupuncture in the treatment
of neurological disorders and in the treatment of myofascial
pain. Learn several effective TCM acupuncture treatments for
various disorders seen in daily clinical practice. Learn how
conditions commonly found in clinical practice can be treated
using any one of several acupuncture approaches, or in combination,
thus enhancing overall treatment results.
